DIY Safety Disclaimer
DIY, gardening and renovation projects carry real risks. Our guides are general information only and are not a substitute for professional advice, training or local regulations.
Use qualified professionals
Electrical, gas, plumbing, structural, roofing and asbestos-related work should be carried out by appropriately qualified and, where required, licensed professionals. Many jurisdictions legally require this and may require permits, approvals or certification. Check local building rules and any housing society, landlord or building management requirements before starting.
General safety principles
- Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety data for every tool, product and material.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment: eye protection, gloves, dust masks or respirators, and hearing protection where needed.
- Scan walls for hidden cables and pipes before drilling or nailing, and isolate power and water before working on fittings.
- Be aware that older homes may contain hazardous materials such as lead paint or asbestos. Have materials tested before sanding, cutting or removing them.
- Use stable ladders correctly and never overreach. Work with a second person when lifting heavy items.
- Ventilate when using paints, adhesives, solvents or cleaning chemicals, and never mix cleaning products.
- Anchor tall furniture to walls, especially in homes with children.
- Keep children and pets away from work areas, tools and chemicals.
